The project began in 2022 with a close-knit trio: pianist Igor Gehenot , bassist Sal La Rocca , and drummer Umberto Odone . Their initial aim was simple: to play comforting jazz standards, in a spirit of returning to the roots of the genre after the upheavals of the health crisis. Together, they revisit the great names of post-bop, from Freddie Hubbard to Lee Morgan, by way of Mulgrew Miller and Nicholas Payton, with freshness and vitality.
From this initial impulse emerged Shining Face , the pianist’s new album. Dedicated to his son, this new work is distinguished by a clear guiding thread: a taste for swing and melody. In keeping with his previous albums, Igor Gehenot affirms his musical signature more than ever: a finely crafted style, a harmonic sensitivity, and a profound artistic coherence.
Driven by an obvious chemistry between the three musicians – already members of the Sal La Rocca Quintet – the project has evolved into a quintet with the arrival of two leading soloists from the Belgian scene: Jean-Paul Estiévenart on trumpet and Steven Delannoye on tenor saxophone. Between original compositions and inspired reinterpretations of standards, pianist Igor Gehenot’s new group explores a vibrant post-bop repertoire that is both demanding and accessible.
Igor Gehenot – piano, Steven Delannoye – tenor saxophone, Jean-Paul Estiévenart – trumpet, Sal La Rocca – double bass, Umberto Odone – drums
