Johannes Brahms
Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15;
Igor Stravinsky’s
“The Rite of Spring”
The powerful opening movement of Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 begins with a resounding timpani roll. And this concerto, with the composer himself as soloist, was a resounding failure at its premiere: the symphonic ambition of this piece was too new and unusual for an instrumental concerto, yet it is precisely for this reason that it is now considered a masterpiece. However, the scandal
provoked by Igor Stravinsky’s ballet “The Rite of Spring” at its premiere in Paris some 50 years later is unsurpassable.
The audience erupted in physical riots in response to music that sought to capture the atmosphere of a ritual “from pagan Russia” through the elemental power of rhythm.
