Swinging between meditative gongs and overwhelming speedcore rhythms, Rutger Muller explores the possibility of an exorcism ritual (exorcism) during an underground club night
In Exorcism, electro-acoustic composer and musician Rutger Muller combines dark ambient and techno with elements from both old and contemporary classical music. He is fascinated by the technological abstraction of spiritual and instrumental traditions. Through sampling, sound design and collaborations with acoustic instrumentalists, he creates a contemporary, mystical sound world that balances on soothing drones and hypnotic rhythms. This contrasting aesthetic challenges the current state of clubs in terms of listener concentration and refinement of instrumental dynamics.
At the cutting edge of ritual and loss of control
Rhythmic trance comes in many forms, from hypnotic, psychedelic and sensual to aggressive. All these forms of trance have one thing in common: the groove or predictability. What if we let go of this groove (almost) completely? What if the rhythms become so fast and chaotic that we can no longer comprehend them in a rational way? Can we perceive our physical rituals and expressions from this chaos? Exorcism challenges you to discover new ways of improvisation (loss of control) through the paradoxical use of control (ritual).
Intro in Situ
Intro in Situ is a progressive house for contemporary music and sound art. For 35 years, Intro – based in Maastricht – has been making room for the creation of music (from Gregorian chant to hip-hop, stylized natural sounds and film music), the development of makers and scientific research into the role of music in society. Since 2020, three composers – Angela de Weijer, Germaine Sijstermans and Rutger Muller – have been guiding Intro in Situ’s artistic course through their work and research. Intro’s motto pushing the boundaries between sound and space is made for them.
