Eat fish once or twice a week to stay healthy; This is often-heard advice. But what is the impact of our consumption on the environment?

In 2020, fisheries produced around 90 million tonnes of fish and other aquatic animals worldwide. Some species have seen their populations decline by more than 80% over the last fifty years due to overfishing.

In Belgium, we do not depend on the consumption of fish for our protein intake. However, each inhabitant consumes on average 25 kg of aquatic products per year. Our habits push us to consume a limited number of species, which leads to their overexploitation.

How can we act on a daily basis? Is it possible to make sustainable choices? Is aquaculture a solution?
