Together with a guide, you go on a stroll along the Maas at Borgharen. You will learn more about the Grensmaas project on the go: flood protection, gravel extraction and the new Maasvallei River Park nature reserve.

In this walk you will get to know an area where nature can take its course. Carried by the wind, water or animals, seeds of herbs and trees sprout, and their flowers attract insects that snack on the nectar and pollen. For example, these little bugs help with pollination so that new seeds can be formed. These millions of seeds are also a tasty snack for birds and mice that, attracted by this abundance of food, migrate to this area.

Konik horses and Galloway cattle are the large grazers that ensure that forest formation is kept in check. All year round they walk through the area foraging and who knows …… maybe we will meet them on our stroll. The herds have a close family relationship and herd mates take good care of each other. Throughout all seasons, with heat and cold, with drought and wetness. It is important that we leave these animals alone. It is also our task to keep the area free from litter. That is why clean-up campaigns are organized for volunteers to remove the washed-up debris that remains on the banks after the high water period.

Today the area is a colorful patchwork of flowers, shrubs, water streams and gravel banks – ancient stones that have been deposited here by the Maas. Bounce stones on the water and see who can build the highest tower …… Yes, there is also play during the walk!
