Garden in the Sky – Saburo Teshigawara, Rihoko Sato (JPN) & Jonathan Roozeman (FIN/NL)

Pure and clean dance in the service of beautiful cello music.
The duet Garden in the Sky by choreographer Saburo Teshigawara and Rihoko Sato was created in collaboration with the Finnish-Dutch cellist Jonathan Roozeman. Live on stage, based on solo works by Bach, Kodaly and Cassado.

The sober cello suites lack any connection with reality; the duet between Teshigawara and Sato is completely in the service of the music. Pure and clean. Saburo Teshigawara: “We dancers sometimes play purely with music. Away from the complex reality, and away from our complicated selves. Not to express, but to become music itself.”

Music
Johann Sebastien Bach: Cello Suites #2, 5 and 6
Gaspar Cassadó: Suite for solo Cello
Zoltán Kodály: Sonata for solo Cello Op.8

Lecture
On Sunday 6 April, music historian Tijmen Wehlburg and dance critic Annette Embrechts will give a masterclass on Bach’s Cello Suites in SCHUNCK. Because why do cellists consider Bach’s Cello Suites as a kind of Bible? And why do choreographers such as Saburo Teshigawara and Anne Teresa de Keersmaeke like to be inspired by them for solos or duets?

schrit_tmacher Festival
This performance and masterclass are part of schrit_tmacher Festival, the international contemporary dance festival in the Euregion, with stages in Heerlen, Kerkrade, Sittard, Aachen (DE) and Eupen (B). For more information, visit schrittmacherfestival.nl
