The frayed edges of unreality.
How can something in different cultures, in different times, in different places and with all kinds of different people bring about the same experience? Shailesh Bahoran focuses on this question in his new work MYSTIC. Building on his previous works SHAKTI and AGHORI, in which Indian philosophy of life and Hindustani culture form the starting points, he searches for the universality of the mystical in MYSTIC.
Cross-pollination
Shailesh Bahoran is a Surinamese-Hindustani choreographer, dancer and theatre maker. With strong roots in hip-hop culture, he has specialized in the street-born dance styles of popping and breaking, both solo and with his Illusionary Rockaz Company (IRC). From this background, he goes on an adventure in MYSTIC with the classically and contemporary trained dancers of ICK Dans Amsterdam. Cross-pollination is also sought in the music and spiritual aspects of the culture of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra. Six musicians play live during the performance.
