TUTU PUOANE QUARTET
From Poetry To Music… And Back
Singer Tutu Puoane kicks off during the very first edition of the Pop-Up Jazzclub concert series. The Belgian-South African Tutu Puoane is one of the most authentic voices of the international jazz and contemporary music scene. With 7 albums to her name and at least as many original projects as her project around Joni Mitchell, the singer has emerged as an acclaimed artist in Europe and beyond. She has also collaborated with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Bert Joris and the Flemish Philharmonic, Wim Vandekeybus, Jasper van ‘t Hof and Tineke Postma. Her clear voice is reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln, Billie Holiday, Dianne Reeves and Patricia Barber.
Together with pianist Ewout Pierreux she wrote a repertoire based on the words of her compatriot and peer Lebogang Mashile. The result is a glowing balance between word and music, with influences from jazz, soul and singer songwriting. Puoane’s beautiful voice, her intuition, her sense of rhythm and melody, combined with her typical charm and humor on stage make every concert a moment that you will never forget. She makes you laugh, she makes you shed a tear here and there, she makes you sing and dance along: she moves you in every possible way. In short, a concert you don’t want to miss!
