Anatolian folk gets a modern interpretation with Meral Polat – De Volkskrant ★★★★
Forgotten stories with new sounds. A guitar, keyboard and piano, a drum kit and a voice; with a simple set-up, the Meral Polat Trio takes a journey from Anatolian folk music to protest mountain blues; Kurdish soul music, from east to west and back. The songs are earthy and raw. Close to the source.
Meral Polat is a Dutch actress, theater maker and singer of Turkish-Kurdish descent. In this theater concert she and her musical partners Chris Doyle (piano and guitar) and Frank Rosaly (drums and percussion) undertake a musical, transformative quest based on her own texts and poems from the poetic legacy of her father, Ali IhsanPolat. Together they tell forgotten stories, which connect her to the way home, with new sounds.
Ez kî me (Who am I) tells universal stories that take on a new meaning today.
In the press
“Benem is desert blues in optima forma and the sinister Waye, with its guitar eruptions, could be a murder ballad by Nick Cave. Polat’s powerful voice floats above the melancholy with graceful inflections.” – De Volkskrant ★★★★
“…heaving, thundering, sometimes gently swaying and then again pounding grooves as a surprising accompaniment to mostly traditional Kurdish and Turkish melodies full of melismatic inflections and decorations…” – Mixedworldmusic.com
