MYD (LIVE BAND)
There is something exciting about observing the different musical ripples that Myd has followed over time. He has been seen doing the mariole, incognito, on an all-inclusive cruise, dancing without stopping in the residential streets of LA, or waddling during his CoMyd 19 livestreams (“best dance show” according to Billboard in front of Calvin Harris and Diplo) sometimes alone and sweet, sometimes mocking and surrounded by guests.

He is a boy who knows how to make people laugh in many ways, without ever forcing himself too much, and who also knows how to make music almost in all situations. Born A Loserreleased on April 30 on Ed Banger / Because Music and it is his first album after more than ten years of career and several EPs including All Inclusive in 2017. A career that started with his friends from Club Cheval, when he was finishing la Femis, at the very end of the 2000s: this prodigious quartet of DJs / producers from the North of France, which he formed with Sam Tiba, Panteros 666 and Canblaster, and to whom he still remains very close, gave a new impetus to the long history of French electro. He then went on Brodinski’s Bromance label, produced hits for rappers SCH, Alonzo or Theophilus London on “Can’t stop” (feat. Kanye West), remixed Dua Lipa and Major Lazer, and was named at the Césars 2018 for the soundtrack of Petit Paysan. Now a member of the Ed Banger team, he works as much with youtuber Squeezie as with indie icon Mac DeMarco, and develops his unique image alongside photographer and director Alice Moitié. What we hear on this disc is logically the synthesis of a decade of personal and sound adventures: a journey between house, pop and the DIY workshop, bathed in an endless summer atmosphere, at the same time hedonistic and melancholy.

From the album Born A Loser , we already knew “Moving Men” with DeMarco, and before him the hit “The Sun”. The title “Born a Loser” is accompanied by a bad trip clip where Myd meets his wig double in his own apartment. “ The song is an anthem dedicated to all the people who consider themselves losers. I share this feeling in order to give them all the strength they need to accomplish great things ”, says the artist, whose real name is Quentin Lepoutre. These “great things” are in this case these fourteen pieces which each seem designed for a particular mood of this late spring and which will undoubtedly stick just as well to the different sequences of the summer days. A multi-ambience landscape that navigates between purely club hymns (“Born A Loser”, “Together We Stand”, “Now That We Found Love”…) and more delicate songs (“We Are the Light”, “Call Me”, “” Moving Men ”). “Born A Loser has a unique structure, ”says Myd. “There are pop songs, but there are also extreme biases in the production. Before I was a little shy on that side. This time, I end this album with a lot of confidence. I did it my way and I’m really happy with it, it’s really important to feel the work accomplished ”.

Born A Loser’s very “layered” sound is the result of a skillful stacking of layers and details, both from the vintage repertoire (we hear samples from Alton Ellis – Black Man’s Pride or a very Californian dry guitar), but also concrete sounds (bicycle bells, real voices captured on the cell phone, sounds of birds…) and more contemporary colors. Besides DeMarco, Myd’s American alter-ego, we can hear the British Bakar on “Got It” or the Uruguayan guitarist Juan Wauters on “Wether the Weather ”. For the solar and melancholy “Let You Speak”, Myd swaps his electro cap for that of indie pop, echoing the music of Metronomy. The title is accompanied by a superb clip signed by the American Dan Carr (Dissidence Prod).

It’s a record that looks like its creator: sometimes rude, but always very inspired and welcoming. It is also an album that Myd describes as a project that he carried out in his corner, drawing on his privacy and his memory: “ For me the album punctuates a chapter more than it begins another”, he explains. “I see inspiration as a lung. Sometimes it’s necessary to take inspiration and knowledge from other people. Then there are also the times when you have to produce a lot and that is. especially since I worked for Born A Loser on my own. I think the next chapter will see me collaborate with other people, and share more of what I’ve done. ”

For the moment we will in any case savor this personal and generous album, where voices and grooves, joys and sorrows mingle, and where Myd reveals, behind the burlesque and the bizarre, a real gift for bittersweet hits.
