Marco Goecke is viewed as one of the most unique choreographic voices today. His distinct style explores the boundaries of dance, making it quintessentially his own. Since 2008, he has been creating for Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). In the Dutch Mountains will mark Goecke’s first full-length creation for the company.
With In the Dutch Mountains Goecke contemplates the absurdities of life and questions our sense of belonging, familiarity and becoming. For this, Goecke finds inspiration in a variety of sources, among which are Cees Nooteboom’s fictitious novel ‘In de Bergen van Nederland’ (In the Dutch Mountains), as well as the 1987 song ‘In the Dutch Mountains’ by Dutch rock band The Nits, that act as a backdrop to the choreographer’s strong artistic connections to the Netherlands: “The ways in which my life has always led me back to the Netherlands, is striking. I keep being drawn back to this country, again and again.”
Goecke joined NDT as an associate choreographer in 2013. An appointment he will extend for another four years as of 2023. Over the years, he created several works for both NDT 1 and NDT 2, including Nichts (2008), Thin Skin (2015), Midnight Raga (2017) The Big Crying (2021), and I love you, ghosts (2022). Goecke has received several awards, of which most recently the Jiří Kylián Ring. As of season 2019-2020 Goecke became the Artistic director of the State Ballet Hannover.
