A poetic, confrontational and actual performance with song and dance about the suffering of the apostle Peter Peter’s tears. An apostle. A docile disciple of Jesus. Perhaps the most loyal of all. Yet he denies Jesus. How must he have felt? Powerless? Guilty? Lonely? Orlando di Lasso, one of the greatest composers of the Renaissance, touches on the essence of Peter’s sorrow and struggle in his madrigal cycle Lagrime di San Pietro.
Inner struggle
Di Lasso’s Tears of Petrus is a semi-staged performance of this musical masterpiece, co-directed by Tido Visser and Nanine Linning. While Peter is separated from the rest of his world, singers and dancers become witnesses to Peter’s suffering. Poetic, confrontational and topical. What ideal holds up in the inner struggle of the naturally weak and fearful human being?
