21 media art works and short films on border control and migration.
Opening hours:
Thurs and Fri: 12 noon to 4 p.m. / Sat and Sun: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Contemporary socially engaged video artists and filmmakers have created relevant and poignant video works, interactive media installations, short films and animations about border controls and migration. Viewmaster Projects situates 21 of these haunting projections in the Cannerberg, a former, now completely gutted, underground secret NATO headquarters in an old marl quarry just south of the city of Maastricht. This disorienting and eerie location reinforces the already powerful sensibility of the projections. The Cannerberg is a clammy, cool and dark tunnel system; marl, reinforced concrete, bricks and thick steel doors are reminiscent of the Cold War, the period when the eastern border of what was then Western Europe was guarded from the bunker complex.
From September 16 to November 13, 2022, part of the corridor system is open to visitors and you can experience how the 21 selected projections interact with each other and with space. The diverse and current work of the selected (inter)national artists, researchers and filmmakers disrupts, moves and can give interpretation and depth to the hard images that determine the daily news.
NO ACCESS presents three approaches to the complex migration issue: 1) Personal (auto-)biographical stories of refugees, sometimes vulnerable or resilient but also rough and confrontational; 2) Data visualizations about border controls and migration flows in which contemporary digital techniques (literally and figuratively) determine the image; 3) Video works with a poetic, symbolic visual language because words and facts do not always cover the subject.
