One of the surprises that PLT presents during the National Theater Weekend 2022 is Each time we fall, a city rises by Panama Pictures. In this new production by choreographer Pia Meuthem, dance, acrobatics and live music merge into one intriguing theater experience.

“Do you ever have the feeling that in our time the world has tilted a bit? That it’s right under your feet…sloping? Each time we fall, a city rises gives that feeling”, wrote Theaterkrant. In Each time we fall… Pia Meuthen shows a world that seems to be in limbo. Against an imposing backdrop that combines sloping plains with hiding places high in the sky, this performance tells a current story about people in search of new certainties. Stumbling, falling and flying, the performers look for something to hold on to. While they threaten to lose their balance, new perspectives open up. When nothing is certain, everything becomes possible!

New perspectives
The rhythmic language of Maria Barnas (1973) is an important inspiration for the design of this production about the fallibility of man. In an unstable universe where everything seems to be in motion, dance, partner and aerial acrobatics flow into each other. Performers and audience are immersed in the sound world of composer Anthony Fiumara and the duo Strijbos & Van Rijswijk. They composed the music in dialogue form. Fiumara’s music related to minimal music thus meets the electro-acoustic compositions of Strijbos & van Rijswijk. Their new joint composition focuses on the voice with all its sound breadth and expressiveness and is performed live by Els Mondelaers.

Panama Pictures
With Panama Pictures, Pia Meuthen develops an authentic signature: unpolished and raw, where dance, circus and music come together with a natural suppleness. The company’s new physical language embraces acrobatics. Each time we fall is performed by an international cast of dancers and acrobats of different ages and backgrounds.
