Deeply connected to country and people, Scandinavian composers touch a sensitive string. With his Second Symphony (1902), Jean Sibelius captured the hearts of his Finnish compatriots.
The robust and pastoral sound world strengthened the Finns in their struggle for independence against the Russians. Sibelius built an overwhelming structure in which melodic themes emerge freely. Contemporary composer Rolf Wallin’s music is just as sophisticated and worldy-wise. Previously, he devoted large-scale works to child soldiers and urbanization. Now Wallin surprises us with a concert for Chinese mouth organ (sheng) and orchestra. The philharmonie zuidnederland plays the Dutch premiere with sheng specialist Wu Wei as our dream soloist.
