“The Rhine keeps flowing through my thoughts, I want to give voice to that river”, Robert Schumann wrote to his publisher in the year in which he composed his Rheinish Symphony.

Home sweet home

With swirling melodies he gave voice to the landscape of his homeland. Antonin Dvorák’s masterful music, for example, is how the voice of his beloved Czech Republic sounds. The British cellist Steven Isserlis solos in Dvorák’s radiant Cello Concerto under the inspiring  baton of chief conductor Duncan Ward, who, before the intermission, will also give a musical voice to his rural and idyllic Great Britain.

‘Ravishing subtlety, beauty of tone, magical throughout…’
