An exciting double bill performed by and created with the dancers of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.
In Two Tales, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam shows two works by emerging choreographers: Free at Last by Danae & Doinysios and The Mourning by Erika Silgoner. These dance makers are winners of the XL Production Award of the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC). And then another similarity: they tell poignant stories with firm roots in the traditions and customs of their native land.
Danae & Doinysios – Free at last
Free at last is based on a well-known Greek myth about the struggle for independence. A group of women dance their last dance on the edge of a cliff as a sign of defiance. With their homeland and ancient Greek stories as sources of inspiration, the choreographic duo Danae & Dionysios create an atmospheric and penetrating dance piece about the cycle of life and traditions that are passed on from generation to generation. Intriguing dance rituals and the intense and mystical atmosphere make this dance piece an overwhelming experience.
Erika Silgoner – The Mourning
The Mourning is a love story, farce and tragedy all rolled into one. From her Sicilian background, choreographer and theater maker Erika Silgoner creates a lively and cinematic choreography with eight dancers, in which sadness, humour, irony, passion and hilarious moments alternate.
Erika Silgoner is the founder of Esklan Art’s Factory, an innovative, young Italian company that performs worldwide. Because of her originality she was asked to create a choreography for part of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
Scapino and RIDCC
Scapino has been a partner of the Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition (RIDCC) from the very beginning. This choreography competition is unique, partly due to the awarding of the largest dance prize in the world; a production budget of 100,000 euros to create a new work. The double bill Two Tales is made possible by this prize and is not only performed by, but also created with the dancers of Scapino Ballet Rotterdam.
