For years the American choreographer Stephen Shropshire, who lives in the Netherlands, has received international recognition for his work, which is both aesthetically harmonious and intellectually challenging. After his much-praised We are nowhere else but here, Shropshire is now returning to Maastricht with a breathtaking adaptation of August Strindberg’s naturalistic tragedy Miss Julie. Strindberg wrote a fierce argument in 1888 about class, sexual policy, and the unequal relationships that form part of the patriarchal system. Themes that are still current and lead to division in our society.

The story of Miss Julie follows the bored daughter of a rich count who tries to seduce one of her father’s servants. The situation escalates and leads to a tragic end. Shropshire edited the plot into an abstracted version in motion. About Miss Julie exposes 19th century social inequality and forces the viewer to think about how much has actually changed.

There is an introduction for the show starting at 19:30 at the venue.
