Improvisation is central in this concert. Ensemble88 has entered into a collaboration with two young musicians/composers who attribute an important role to this design principle: Germaine Sijstermans and Rutger Muller. They each use this tool in their own way, during this concert on Intro in Situ’s beautiful, new location in their Muziekhuis aan de Maas: Lage Kanaaldijk 113 B, Maastricht

In the two pieces by Germaine Sijstermans, the musicians approach each other with pricked ears. In the acoustics and resonance of each other’s sounds, they discover the space and possibilities within the framework of the compositions, to place their tones with freedom and according to their own insight.
This happens in ‘Untitled’ in a duet surrounded by sound shadows performed by the other musicians.
Soloists and ensemble create a heaving play of diphthongs in the piece ‘M’ by reacting to each other’s dynamic developments within the chords.
Rutger Muller calls his work “Processive II” a spatial composition improvisation inspired by electroacoustic music, dark ambient, gong sounds and Japanese Noh theatre. In this composition, meditative and eerie sounds alternate, while floating through the space through a spatial speaker setup. At the center of this are the musicians and they are challenged to discover timbres and interactions (such as counterpoints and question-and-answer play). In this way, linearity and hierarchy fade and quasi-unpredictable patterns – and silences – arise.
