Whether babbling rivers or roaring seas: nature in all its facets serves as a constantly bubbling source of inspiration for musician Matt Carmichael. The young jazz saxophonist was born in the Scottish Highlands. Influenced by the idyllic landscape of his homeland and traditional Scottish music, he has developed a distinctive sound. He developed an early interest in large ensembles, so much so that he was accepted into the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland as a teenager. Following his CD debut, “Where Will The River Flow” (2021) and its follow-up, “Marram,” Carmichael is one of the leading voices in Glasgow’s emerging jazz scene. His third album, “Dancing With Embers,” will be released at the end of March. Several songs from it will also be heard as orchestral arrangements in his second project with the WDR Big Band. This project is led by chief conductor (and tenor) Bob Mintzer.
