A Celebration of Human Strength
The drummers of Japan are beloved at PLT. All recent major shows, from Passion in 2019 to Hinotori in 2024, were performed at Theater Heerlen. In 2026, the Taiko drum group returns with a new athletic drumming spectacle: ‘Hito no Chikara’, or The Power of Human Strength. A celebration of human strength in this era defined by technology and AI.
The Human Heartbeat
YAMATO is a Taiko drum group from Asuka-mura in Nara, Japan. The Japanese also call this place the birthplace of Japan. With more than 40 Taiko drums on stage, YAMATO tells spiritual stories. In Hito no Chikara, this is a story about human strength: physical and mental strength, human ingenuity and resilience, the power of the collective, and the human power to love. The sound of the drums represents the human heartbeat; the heart that will keep beating as long as we live. The primal power of the Odaiko
YAMATO’s largest drum, the Odaiko, is made from a 400-year-old tree. The Odaiko is approximately two meters in diameter and weighs 500 kg. The members of the group have trained their bodies to the extreme to play this immense instrument. “The vibrations of the drums touch you deep in your heart and the acoustic pressure surpasses the imagination.” – Heaven
