JAZZ MAASTRICHT PRESENTS: THE POP-UP JAZZCLUB
Jasper Blom Quartet (NL) feat. Pablo Held (DE)
Jasper Blom is regarded as one of the most important tenor and soprano saxophonists of the Dutch jazz scene. As a composer he strives for an intelligent synthesis of jazz, pop, classical and improvised music. One night he shares the stage with Benjamin Herman in a hard bop program, the next night he indulges in free improvisations to lead a funk session later in the week where he experiments with guitar effects on his sax.
In between, he immerses himself in the piano works of Claude Débussy.
In 2006 Blom started the Jasper Blom Quartet with guitarist Jesse van Ruller, bassist Frans van der Hoeven and drummer Martijn Vink, in which all possible influences come together. For this concert, the Jasper Blom Quartet invites a special guest: the German pianist Pablo Held, known for his pioneering Pablo Held Trio, which John Scofield has dubbed ‘one of the best groups of today’s music’.
Lineup:
Jasper Blom – tenor sax
Jesse van Ruller – guitar
Pablo Held – piano
Frans van der Hoeven – double bass
Martin Vink – drums
Julia Warren (CA)
The saxophonist Julia Warren has exchanged bustling Montreal for Maastricht. It starts with a 93 year old silver saxophone that eventually led to her own sound; deep, playful, honest and expressive.
A beloved figure in many music scenes, a performance by Julia Warren brings together exceptional artists from around the world – from the Netherlands, Montreal, Istanbul, Sint Maarten, South Korea, and beyond. The core collective of musicians and dancers has stirred all ages, many places and different spaces. From street to stage, their creative music of many names has been performed on old bridges, artfully obscure hangouts, and many different venues and festivals such as the Montréal International Jazz Festival, So What’s Next? festival and Jazz Out Fest Limburg. Now Warren takes the stage solo and performs a live saxophone improvisation with a curated set of original and sampled tracks.
