The heartbeat of the kettledrums and the dramatic string melody that opens his First symphony are the beginning of a journey through deep feelings and vast musical vistas. Ward is looking forward to the renewed collaboration with Cédric Tiberghien. ‘He made the piano sparkle,’ the Volkskrant wrote excitedly after Tiberghien’s unforgettable performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto at chief conductor Duncan Ward’s inaugural concert. Now the French master pianist challenges himself with Strauss’ capricious Burlesque, a piano concerto that should not be called a piano concerto, full of virtuoso antics and melancholic melodies from the master storyteller of Romanticism.
