London Philharmonic Orchestra
By popular request, the London Philharmonic Orchestra is returning to Heerlen! The London top orchestra was already a guest in 2019 and made a deep impression on the sold-out hall. “Quality a top performance. Many visitors moved along to the music and here and there people became emotional. Wonderful!”, was the reaction of one of the visitors.

symphonic riddle
After a full day of violin lessons, he sat down at the piano and ran his fingers over the keys. Just to relax a bit. His wife heard the piano sounds. Suddenly she jumped up. “Hey, what’s that?” she asked. Something in that last melody had touched her. He looked up. “Oh, it’s nothing,” he said. “But, I could make something out of it…” It was 1889. Composer Edvard Elgar was already in his thirties. The Enigma Variations, the work that originated from that one special melody, became his big breakthrough. For a long time it remained a mystery what the different parts of the Enigma Variations meant with their mysterious titles. In 1911, Elgar lifted a corner of the veil. In this enigmatic, humorous and moving music he portrayed fourteen of his most dear friends. We meet, among others, Ysobel the viola player, Caroline’s wife, the moving Nimrod, Sinclair’s barking dog and that one mysterious nameless friend (or was it a girlfriend…) whom he only indicated with three stars. This quintessentially British masterpiece is in the very best hands with the London Philharmonic and Edward Gardner.

“A barrel full of listening pleasure”
Before the intermission, the Londoners perform Richard Wagner’s poignant Tannhäuser Overture. In passionate symphonic sounds, Wagner paints the story of Tannhäuser, the minstrel of love, in an atmosphere of nocturnal visions. Then the Belgian top clarinetist Roeland Hendrikx shines in Mozart’s unearthly beautiful Clarinet Concerto. A real classic hit. “…that it sounds good. His Mozart is a barrel full of listening pleasure’, wrote De Standaard about Hendrikx’s Mozart.
