Opera Zuid – ROMÉO ET JULIETTE

Opera Zuid – ROMÉO ET JULIETTE

There are many versions of the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, but the opera written by Charles Gounod in 1867 is undoubtedly one of the most romantic readings of the story.

He based it on Shakespeare’s popular play about the impossible love between Romeo and Juliet, both descendants of the two rival families Montague and Capulet. In Shakespeare’s words, Gounod convinces us that love is an almost invincible force, which can only be stopped by force.

Gounod, also known for his opera Faust (1859), shows the beauty and vulnerability of the young couple in a penetrating and intimate way. With no fewer than four delightful duets, he focuses on the personal feelings of the lovers. Of the many catchy melodies, Juliette’s famous waltz aria, “Je veux vivre…” (I want to live…) is the most famous.

Opera Zuid, with the successful Swiss director Julien Chavaz and the Austrian conductor Philipp Pointner, once again opts for a fresh look at a classic story.
