Scapino Ballet Rotterdam – Casablanca

Scapino Ballet Rotterdam – Casablanca

A performance about passion, freedom and desire for a better world
The film Casablanca with Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart in the lead roles is considered one of the best films ever. Choreographer Ed Wubbe uses the story of the Hollywood classic from 1942 as the basis for a new choreography for Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. A visual performance about passion, freedom and the longing for a better world.

Two worlds
In Casablanca, Wubbe forges different disciplines together into a thrilling whole. On a revolving stage he creates a imaginative, theatrical world with dance in different styles, with circus elements and with unparalleled music. Behind this romantic image, however, is a twilight world in which reality and fantasy rub against each other and the boundaries between good and evil blur. Scapino’s Casablanca is set in a place where people, fleeing war, wait for a better life.

Original Soundtrack
The musical starting point of the performance is the original soundtrack of the film and jazz songs from the 1940s. The well-known song as time goes by is also featured in the performance in various arrangements. Traditional Moroccan music can also be heard in this hopeful performance.
