Sonico (bel) – The Edge of Tango

Piazzolla – Rovira

The music of two groundbreaking innovators in one concert.
Brussels’ SONICO pays tribute to Astor Piazzolla with Piazzolla-Rovira: The Edge of Tango. The ‘tango nuevo’ inventor is said to have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. However, Piazzolla was not the only pioneer in the genre. SONICO – hailed by the Argentine press as ‘the savior of tango nuevo’ – likes to offer a broader perspective through the revolutionary compositions of that other innovator, Eduardo Rovira.

SONICO did not choose the title for this double portrait at random. Astor Piazzolla and Eduardo Rovira are known as the two pioneering pioneers of the tango nuevo. The story goes that there was a certain rivalry between them. In fact, the first important impetus for the development of modern tango was made in 1955 by Piazzolla with his Octeto Buenos Aires. Rovira joined the Octeto La Plata, but he did not leave any recordings.

Controversy
In short, the question of who had the first and most influence has still not yielded a concrete or definitive answer. Perhaps that’s a good thing, because for SONICO this unanswered question is the starting point for Piazzolla-Rovira: The Edge of Tango. On the album and in the show of the same name, the music of the two octets, which paved the way for the renewal of tango music, is juxtaposed for the first time.

Top 10
SONICO is now hailed by the Argentine press as ‘the savior of the tango nuevo’. Leading international magazines such as Billboard and Rolling Stone place the Belgian ensemble in the top 10 of most essential contemporary tango ensembles.

This concert is part of Tango Brutal in Heerlen.
