Three magical rituals featuring our artist-in-residence.
Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s *Le Sacre du printemps* (The Rite of Spring) ranks among the most revolutionary works ever written. For the season opening at Theater Heerlen, Philzuid pairs this milestone with a spectacular work by Toru Takemitsu—featuring five percussionists led by Dominique Vleeshouwers. Dominique serves as artist-in-residence at PLT for the 2026–2027 season; on three occasions, the percussionist will showcase both his immense talent and his versatility.

Stravinsky’s majestic *Rite of Spring*
In 1913, a young Stravinsky completed his masterpiece in collaboration with choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. Both the ballet and the music sparked a sensational premiere. The pagan dance ritual—in which a young girl dances herself to death for the gods—deeply shocked the refined Parisian audience. The primal dance rhythms and the emotional, melodic soundscape of *Le Sacre* have since inspired countless composers. To this day, the unprecedented driving force of Stravinsky’s majestic *Rite of Spring* continues to capture the imagination; its asymmetrical, pounding rhythms strike deep into the soul.

Debussy’s *Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune*
In this concert, Stravinsky’s “Big Bang” is accompanied by two kindred, ritualistic orchestral works. The atmospheric, iridescent hues of Claude Debussy’s *Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune* ignite an extraordinary dreamworld. This signature work by Debussy is Impressionist music *pur sang*—music rich in tonal nuances that is best experienced live.

Takemitsu’s *From me flows what you call Time*
The percussion spectacular *From me flows what you call Time* by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu is another remarkable experience. In his body of work, Takemitsu fuses the Zen spirit of Japanese music with the Western classical tradition and Impressionism. He composed *From me flows what you call Time* in 1990, commissioned by Carnegie Hall in New York to mark its centenary. In this serene work, the five percussionists represent the elements of nature: water, fire, earth, wind, and air. The entire concert hall is immersed in a magical sonic ritual. Five percussionists, led by specialist Dominique Vleeshouwers, take on this challenge together with Philzuid.
