The Tallis Scholars (UK)

This music hits the core and hits the heart
Conductor: Peter Phillips

The Tallis Scholars return to Kerkrade with a tribute to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. His contemplative compositions, often built on simple triad chords, are loved worldwide. The music is often simple, but touches the core and strikes at the heart.

Several world-famous pieces by Pärt are heard in this concert. However, his music can also be combined wonderfully with the other music in which the Tallis Scholars excel: that of the composers from the Renaissance. Pärt is therefore surrounded in this special tribute by composers such as Tallis, Sheppard and Mouton. Allegri’s famous Miserere is also present.

The Tallis Scholars
The Tallis Scholars have been around since 1973. The British ensemble gained great fame with sparkling renditions of mainly vocal repertoire from the Renaissance. In addition to compositions from the past, The Tallis Scholars also like to sing music from today. They commissioned various contemporary composers for new work. This resulted in commissioned compositions by, among others, John Tavener, Eric Whitacre and Nico Muhly. The ensemble recently devoted a complete CD to the choral work of Arvo Pärt.

Founder Peter Phillips
Conductor Peter Phillips has devoted himself throughout his long career to researching and performing Renaissance polyphonic music. He studied at Oxford with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold. With the Tallis Scholars he founded, he performed almost two thousand times and made more than 60 record and CD recordings.
