The international art and antiques fair TEFAF in Maastricht will receive an additional 600.000 euro subsidies from the province for promotion and marketing over the next two years.

Half of this will be paid this year, the other half in 2021.

Better accessibility
The amount is a kind of compensation for non-compliance with the agreement to make Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) more accessible to foreign visitors of the TEFAF by creating more connections with other airports. This was agreed in December 2017 in a deal with the province, the municipality of Maastricht and the MECC conference center, whereby TEFAF committed to remaining in the MECC for another ten years.

At the time, it was said that TEFAF might leave Maastricht. But in practice, these new connections did not materialize. That is why it has now been agreed to scrap that obligation in exchange for an additional subsidy.

Deal
“This is the result of negotiation,” wrote deputy Joost van den Akker (VVD) in a communication from the Limburg Parliament. In it he makes it clear that the 600.000 euro will also be provided if new extra international connections are introduced with MAA.

Incidentally, it appears from the announcement that TEFAF also failed to meet an agreement from December 2017. This involves organizing an educational program in Maastricht at the time of the TEFAF. But that did not happen. That agreement has now also been dashed.

TEFAF 2020
The modified collaboration agreement was signed on March 1. That was a week before this year’s TEFAF. It closed a few days earlier than planned due to the corona crisis.
