Each year, the festival takes on a different theme for its performances and this year it has been announced as Moeder Aarde.
“Central to this theme are the fascinating richness of the earth, the miraculous presence of life and its beauty and the magnificence of nature that transcends man. Last but not least, the horrifying and punishing power of that same nature, which seems to be returning, now that man is working hard to kill his primal mother.”
The festival is primarily of music but also includes various forms of theatre, film, exhibitions and even lectures and foot tours. Performances are by national and international musicians and ensembles but also showcase new, young talent. They aim to present unorthodox choices and original perspectives and show how surprisingly universal and topical the chosen themes are. Many programs are produced especially for Musica Sacra and will premiere during the festival.
Musica Sacra Maastricht takes place (mainly) in those places where “the sacred” is experienced as self-evident. In Maastricht, these are the places in the historic city center: in, in front of, on and between the old churches and buildings.
Theater aan het Vrijthof is the festival heart of Musica Sacra. Productions take place here and this is the location of continuous programming with exhibitions and other activities such as various lectures and radio broadcasts. A place where people can meet during the festival and exchange their experiences.
Musica Sacra festival, Maastricht will take place from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 September 2021 in various locations around the city.
